The SKUA is the largest boat that can be sensibly demounted and towed behind a car.

With round bilge hulls, dagger-boards, kick-up semi-balanced rudders and a performance rig, Skua was designed for those who want a larger version of the micromultihulls like Strider. Basically still a 4 berth, the hulls are larger enough to have 'snug doubles' if required. With a greater loading capacity and off shore capability than a micro, Skua can also be considered the minimum size for the longer coastal races.

In 2002/3 a very experienced German sailor sailed a Skua from Germany across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. Owner Frank Schernikau  reported "we had a fantastic crossing of Bay of Biscay, 49 hours from Audierne/France to Cedeira/Spain, almost all the time under screecher, the colour of the water changing to a fantastic blue and watching dolphins playing around the bows at night".

Although this trip proved the seaworthiness of the design and should give anyone contemplating building a Skua a lot more confidence, the Skua is not really designed for crossing oceans. So think very seriously before doing so. Saturn or Gypsy would be better choices for ocean cruising.

Here is a short Youtube clip of a Skua sailing to windward in Holland. It doesn't look as though it is sailing fast, no spray, no wake, no fuss, until that is you see it going past the monohull - which must itself be doing 6 knots - yet it looks like it is standing still. And of course many people still think multihulls don't sail to windward....see here for proof they do!
